customers to benefit from M-Pesa payment services at councils and
municipalities throughout the country.
By our correspondent, Dar es Salaam
Tanzania’s
leading technology and Communication Company, Vodacom Tanzania PLC and The
Ministry of Regional Administration and Local Government (TAMISEMI),
have entered a new partnership to strengthen the financial payment system, integrating
M-PESA to 127 local government offices in Tanzania.
The move is set to benefit over 14 million Vodacom customers from using M-Pesa at
councils and municipalities in the country.
Speaking during announcement of the
partnership in Dar es Salaam, Minister for Regional Administration
and Local Government,
Suleiman Jaffo emphasized on the importance of using
digital channels such as M-Pesa in processing payments and collecting revenues,
saying that the move will improve records keeping and reports as well as reduce
fraud and increase government revenue collection.
“Paying through digital channels will save
time that was spent on queues. Now we have M-Pesa, an efficient payment system that
I believe will give us more time to address other development activities. I
thank Vodacom for partnering with TAMISEMI on this initiative. I hope this
service will make payments easier and benefit everyone by keeping records of
transactions, improving financial security and increasing revenue collection in
general”, Minister Jaffo remarked.
Director
of M-Pesa, Epimack Mbeteni said that Vodacom is expecting to extend its service
to more government and private institutions in order to make digital payment
system easier, more safe and efficient.
“A
high percentage of Tanzanians are already using M-Pesa to process various payments
like Luku, water bills and road traffic fines. We are extending this service to
local government authorities in order to improve the payment collection through
our digital platform,” said Mbeteni.
The
partnership between TAMISEMI and M-Pesa will enable Vodacom customers to pay more
than 205 local government bills conveniently and efficiently such as business
licenses, building permits, parking fees and many others.
“We are all witnesses to M-Pesa on how it
continues to change the payment ecosystem in the country. We hope that all payments
in local government authorities will be easier, faster and more secure.
In
order to pay through M-Pesa, a customer must access M-Pesa menu by dialing *
150 * 00 #, choose to pay by M-Pesa, then government payments, a reference
number will then be provided by the local government offices. A customer can also
use the M-Pesa APP to make payment at any time,” concluded Mbeteni.
